The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) declared a two-week definite strike on 2 December 2024.
This action was taken in response to the government’s failure to fulfil nine key items in the jointly developed work plan aimed at resolving long-standing trade disputes.
The strike was intended as a warning and a potential precursor to an indefinite industrial action.
On 9 December 2024, a conciliation meeting was held by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.
The meeting included representatives of the Union and the government to address the issues and prevent an indefinite strike.
A new memorandum of understanding was signed during the meeting, outlining steps to resolve the dispute.
A review meeting was scheduled for 23 January 2025 to assess progress and discuss any remaining matters.
The Union’s National Executive Council will convene after the review meeting to evaluate the outcomes and decide on the next course of action.
Members of the Union have been directed to return to work on Monday, 16 December 2024.
The Union expressed gratitude to its members for their active involvement in the strike.
The Union also called on the government to honour the agreements to avoid further industrial action.
